    “Soneto”

    Awesomeness.

    awe

What does it mean to be awesome?

Although I like to consider myself as someone awesome, this is a question that has been camping in my mind for several weeks now.

The whole topic of awesomeness makes me think, inevitably, in these individuals I’ve met in my life. This remarkable and outstanding people that just after exchanging a few words are capable of taking me from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds.

I’m sure you too have your own group of people that has caused awe in you.
But how is it that they become so amazing and exceptional? How can we too reach that level?

Most of you are thinking: “It’s a matter of attitude.”
I am thinking: “Yes, but there has to be something else.”

Below, I’ve identified and listed (in no particular order) some of the main characteristics and actions that Awesome people harvest and put into action.

    Know your ‘Heroes’.
We all have people we admire and that we look up to. These can be either real or fictional characters; they can be alive or not. They are able to stimulate us into action and to inspire us. In my case, I have Heroes ranging from Picasso to the Pink Panther. Who are your heroes and why?

    Find your Passion.
This is a more difficult one. What triggers you? What motivates you and move you in the inside? Why do you step out of bed every morning?  I know people that at age 37 still haven’t found their true passion. The tricky thing is that it does not have to be something in concrete; it can be something abstract and intangible. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be something static; it can change over time, morphing after every meaningful, impactful life experience.

    Learn the hard stuff.

About that which makes you passionate. A.k.a: getting into deep detail. What are those things that cannot be learned in school? Things that can’t be found in a YouTube tutorial, that can’t be found in a book or manual. I am talking about learning to do the things that do not have one single correct answer.

    Associate with other people.
Connect with other individuals you think to be great in what they do. You can either find a group of people you share your beliefs with or, on the other hand, engage with individuals who are completely different to you; that perform the total opposite of what you do. You can belong to these groups in parallel or be part of one at a time. This groups will help you exchange ideas, beliefs, perspectives, impressions, plans, thoughts and even dreams.

    Do something relevant.
Start something. No matter how big or how small. Something that promises to add value. Hopefully, it will be something that you feel attracted to and that at the same time makes sense. Also, make sure it is something that serves a purpose,  not only for you, but for others as well. Add value. Create impact. Here is where you really start to be awesome.

    Have fun.
Awesomeness and Playfulness both have 11 letters. Search for the things that pop a smile on your face. Look for that joy in what you do. This is imperative. If you are not having fun, just leave it…and run. Run towards something that can bring back that special feeling of amusement and playfulness.

    Know when to reinvent yourself.
Not even awesomeness lasts forever. We all reach a moment when we have to rethink, readapt, renovate, refresh, renew who we are and what we do. The difficult thing is knowing when is that moment knocking at the door.

    Help Others.
Do not forget about your surroundings. You shouldn’t only create and do stuff to add value to other people; you could also help them in their own stuff. I am not saying you should run around offering help out loud. You will know when the right moment comes. Help them be awesome as well.

    We’ll become Wakes.

    Photo1

At every ending, there is little you can do to avoid becoming nothing more than just a “wake”.

It is unfortunately beautiful how we leave everything behind: change our home, our friends, our food…come to somewhere completely different, plant a seed and just when you think you are fully settled, Time comes, touches your shoulder and whispers in your ear: “I’m over”.

I spent a year in this great city. Just 365 days, but it has completely changed the way I see my life, the things I have and the things I don’t; the things I want and the things I won’t.

It is not the first time I become a trail or a wake. I’ve been one all my life.
This time, I’lll be a wake in the wind over the sky of Madrid.
I’ll catch a plane in two weeks and the only thing left will be a scar in the firmament.
I’ll be a wake in the skin and the hearts of those who let me.

I’ll be a wake in you.

    Lessons from a Camel

I’ve been to 25 counties already, but I happened to saw a camel for the first time a few months ago, in Marrakech. I am from Panama, a tropical country with no Camels - despite of the heat.

It was hard for me to get out of the initial sock and amazement of seeing that animal right in from of my eyes. It was weird not having to watch it through a screen on Discovery Channel.

The only thing that took me out of the hypnotic state was the sound of the deep roar coming out of his throat that later ended up taking my sight directly into his eyes. We saw each other. We somehow clicked. I saw his eyes. So old. So wise.

After climbing to his back, I started making a not so obvious connection in my head. A connection I never felt before with an animal.

Once seated on his curved back, it was impossible for me not to think about “Journeying”.

I started recalling in my mind all those times I left home and how much I have gained and learned in each one of those journeys even if it was a short one, even if it was only a journey to my inner self.
I could feel he was trying to show me his stories.

In a millisecond I got inside his thoughts and memories. I could see him traveling for miles and back. I could do nothing but reflect about the past 5 years of my life and all my comings and goings.
I came to realize how physically and mentally tiring my journeys had been. I thought on how I had to fetch for strength and energy where there was none. This daunting trips were often filled with challenges, spiritual and psychological challenges. After some time traveling, it became mandatory for me to develop an endurance system that allowed me to keep my spirit up and to keep me going. Just as the Camel had.

I also realized that most of these journeys have been very long and difficult, but have shaped me into who I am right now.

That’s the same thing I saw in his eyes and felt in his breathing and in his dried fur. He was trying to say it out loud with all the growls and bleats. I could feel it by how he moved.

All his temperance and strength he still had despite of the burden carried on his back over the years and that had paid off with nothing less than experience. I felt somehow understood but at the same time I felt respect and admiration for him.

I am grateful I met “Camel”; I’m glad I found him in Marrakech through the path of life. I had never paused to think about the importance of journeying and endurance as I did that day. I now know that the biggest and strongest lessons come from the journey itself, not from the destination.

So a few weeks ago I went for the second time in my life to México.

I decided to make this trip not precisely for tourism.

It was a trip with a lot of expectancy since it was more than 5 months since the last time I saw her hypnotizing green eyes.

After 11 days I got to disconnect a lot from my job and from life trivialities and focused all my energy into enjoying my time in one of the most interesting and diverse counties in Latin America with my Mexican love.

About the trip I have to highlight Guanajuato; very small but beautiful city, great place to visit and to spend a couple of nights with great company. I will also have to mention the food. Ufff I think I’ve never eaten so amazingly tasty in my life. I’ve been to 24 countries, and I dare to say that Mexican gastronomy, flavors and variety of plates cannot be beaten.

After my visit, I know that I continue in love with my girlfriend, but now I’m also in love with her country. In this moment only a little more than 3 months are separating us from being together. I’ve never been in a relationship like this, but I think it’s going to be worth the wait after all.
